Interview with Nexigen Business Development Manager Monica Turner

Monica Turner attended and graduated from Miami University with a degree in Business & Integrated studies. Monica has over 13 years of business development experience including work as a as Communication consultant with Cincinnati Bell then to T-Mobile as a regional Manager.

What inspired you to pursue a career in technology, and how did you get your start in the industry?  

I was drawn to the dynamic nature of technology from a young age, and my journey began with my first pager in high school. College led me to Cincinnati Bell, marking the commencement of my career in the telecom industry. There, I realized technology’s power to connect people, and its importance in our lives.

Can you share some of the significant challenges you’ve encountered professionally, and how you addressed them?

My career as a woman in business has had its challenges, especially when encountering diverse cultures with different views on women’s roles. However, I viewed these instances as opportunities for growth. I have learned to navigate these scenarios, establish lasting connections, and redefine expectations. This journey has made me a resilient leader, ready to inspire and support others in their professional paths.

How do you stay updated on the latest in technology, and what resources do you utilize for information?

Keeping current involves continuous learning, often facilitated by the talented individuals around me. Additionally, I actively engage with industry updates and participate in training programs. This blend of learning from my network and proactive self-study helps me stay in tune with the fast-paced tech world.

In your opinion, what are the key skills for effective relationship management in technology, and how have you developed these skills?

Successful relationship management in tech is grounded in genuine curiosity about others and being consistently reliable. I prioritize active listening and learning from others’ experiences. When faced with uncertainties, I rely on my network and resources to find the best answers. These skills have been refined over time, shaping how I build and sustain strong professional relationships.

Lastly, can you tell us about your life outside work, and how you spend your free time?

Away from the office, I am passionate about my family and the natural world. Gardening isn’t just a hobby for me, it’s a sanctuary, a time when I can truly connect with the earth and cultivate life from a single seed. There’s something genuinely rewarding about nurturing a plant and seeing it flourish.

In addition to gardening, I’m an avid beekeeper. I find the world of bees utterly fascinating – the harmonious hive dynamics, their role in pollination, and, of course, the sweet honey they produce.

Recently, my interest has gravitated towards permaculture – a system of agricultural principles centered around simulating or utilizing patterns observed in natural ecosystems. I am captivated by the idea of creating sustainable and self-sufficient ecosystems that benefit both humans and the environment. For me, it’s about more than just conservation; it’s about living in sync with the natural world and consciously using its resources in a respectful, sustainable manner. It’s these endeavors that truly nourish my soul in my downtime.
